Max Fosh
Project: YouTube Short
My Role: Editor
Year: 2023
This was one of my first edits for Max Fosh, a YouTuber with 4M followers. It was also the first video that he and his Producers had shot exclusively for YouTube Shorts - so we were in a definite testing ground.
To add to the pressure, the world of vertical short-form content is a ruthless one, and if your edit isn't completely engaging from second 0 it's getting swiped away in a heartbeat.
Here's a run down of the techniques that I was employing during the edit, all in the name of increasing audience retention:
1) Immediately, and concisely, setting up the premise.
2) A map graphic to track progress.
3) Introducing conflict: rejected pizza orders + will the pizza be there on time?
4) Selecting varied sections of the music to emphasise key moments.
5) Increasing stimulation by adding a zoom animation to each subtitle.
6) Seamless looping of the voiceover and music to encourage a second view.
The video, a first attempt at a new format for Max's channel, went on to amass over 17M views.
I have continued working with Max and his team, Aziz and Molly, regularly as both a Camera Operator and Editor.
